森鷗外*1が1911年（明治44年）に発表した短篇「妄想」*2について書かれたblogのエントリーはけっこうある。例えば、

注目されているのは、作中の主人公による若き日の回想。それは当然であろう。しかし、その回想が行われるセッティング、荒海に注ぐ河口の「砂山」に建てられた「小家」に言及したのは、今挙げたものにはなかった。私は「目前には広々と海が横わってゐる」という冒頭のセンテンス（p.7）から始まるセッティングの描写によってこの小説世界に引き込まれたのだった。また、河口というか海と川の境界の記述を読んでこれほど心を揺さぶられたのは、黒田夏子さんの短篇「虹」を読んで以来だったのだ*3。
さて、鷗外のこの小説にとって、この川は無名の川ではない。鷗外は「河は上総夷灊川である。海は太平洋である」と場所と名前を指定している。「夷灊川」とは夷隅川*4のことだろう。「夷灊」は夷隅の古い呼称で、イシミと念む*5。
