レゲエ・バンド、トゥーツ＆ザ・メイタルズ*2のリーダー、トゥーツ・ヒバート*3が現地時間９月11日にジャマイカのキングストンで息を引き取った。享年77歳。死因は明らかにされていないが、新型コロナウィルスの犠牲になった疑いが濃厚である。彼は８月末にCOVID-19の検査を受け、その結果を待つためにICUに入れられていたことが報道されていた*4。
さて、トゥーツ・ヒバートの生涯はレゲエという音楽ジャンルとともにあった。彼はまだそのジャマイカのポップ・ミュージックがスカ（Ska）とかロック・ステディ(Rock Steady）と呼ばれていた頃から活動していたし、彼こそが「レゲエ」*5というジャンル名を作ったのだった。トゥーツ＆ザ・メイタルズは1968年に”Do the Reggay”という曲をリリースしている*6。こうしたレゲエの創世記をドキュメントしたFrom Bam Bam to Cherry Oh! Babyというコンピレーション・アルバムを高校生のときに聴いて、その中に収録されているトゥーツ＆ザ・メイタルズの”Sweet and Dandy”（花嫁と花婿）という曲はレゲエというジャンルの中でいちばん好きな曲になっていたのだった*7。
