最近レゲエの話を立て続けにしているような気がするが*1。

今月中国ツアーを行っているレゲエのプロデューサーClive Chinへのインタヴュー。彼は三世の華人で、広東省生まれの祖父は香港を経て、1920年代にジャマイカのキングストンに定住した。Clive Chinは父親のVincent Chinが1958年に開設したレコーディング・スタディオRandy’sのオーナー。現在56歳。
話が過去形であることに注意。
We had a big Chinese population and our own Chinese music. I recently found a rocksteady gem from 1960 by a Chinese-Jamaican guy called Steven Chan, singing in Mandarin!
Clive Chinは華人のジャマイカ（カリブ）音楽への貢献として、Byeon Lee、Leslie Kong、そして父親であるVincent Chinの名を挙げている。
また曰く、
具体的には語られないが、1970年代のジャマイカで華人排斥運動が起こったということになる？
Growing up there, it was the best of times, but in the 1970s, times changed and people were threatened to leave what they had built. To average Jamaicans, we were all called Mr Chin, regardless of whether your name was Wong, Chang or Lee. Many families moved to North America - there are now Chinese-Jamaicans in Montreal and Toronto.
