12月３日、スマトラの火山、マラピ山*4が噴火。登山客が巻き込まれ、最初は11名が死亡と伝えられた。翌４日も噴火があり、現地時間12月５日の時点での死者数は22名（或いは23名）に達している。
マラピ山は、インドネシアにある127の火山の中で最も活発であると言われている。1979年の噴火では60名が犠牲になっている。
