第１章のタイトルにある「象」とは〈群盲象を撫でる〉の「象」。第２章では歴史的人物としての釈迦について述べられている。第３章は業と輪廻転生についての、第４章は四諦
についての解説。第５章以降は仏教の歴史についての解説になる。釈迦入滅後の仏教の分裂、大乗仏教の生成。近代仏教学においては大乗仏教を非本来的なものだとする傾向（所謂「大乗非仏説論」）が強いが*2、著者は大乗仏教の仏教としての本来性を擁護しているように思える。曰く、

None of the Buddha's early teachings is rejected by the Mahayana, although they are sometimes reinterpreted in radical ways. The Mahayana saw itself as recovering their true meaning which, it claimed, had been lost sight of by the early tradition. Indeed, much of what is found in the Mahayana is not new. For example, the notion of selfless compassion-which finds expression in the bodhisattva ideal-was already evident in the Buddha's life of service to others. The doctrine of emptiness can be seen in embryonic form in the teachings on impermanence and no-self. Finally, the meditator's experience of the mind in the higher trances as luminous and pure, could easily foreshadow the conclusion that consciousness itself is the underlying reality. (pp.67-68)

第６章ではアショーカ王*3に始まる亜細亜における仏教の伝播が概説される。東南亜細亜、中国漢地、日本、チベット。第７章は（歴史から外れて）禅定（瞑想）の解説。第８章は仏教と倫理の関係について。ダルマ概念、戒律。また殺生、妊娠中絶、人権といった倫理問題に対する仏教の歴史的／現実的／可能的スタンス。さらに、方便の問題。第９章は仏教の西洋への拡がり。既にアショーカ王は仏教流布のための使者をマケドニアや（現在の）中東に派遣しており、西暦２世紀の希臘の文書に仏教についての言及があるにも拘わらず（Chapter 6, p.69）、仏教の西洋への本格的な紹介は15世紀に始まるイエズス会士たちの亜細亜伝道以降のことであり、仏教への関心の本格的な高揚は19世紀中葉を俟たなければならなかった（p.110）。ここでは西洋への仏教の伝播が、学術研究、哲学者や文学者（例えばショーペンハウエルやヘルマン･ヘッセ）による摂取、亜細亜人仏教徒の移民にわけて解説される。また、（英国・米国中心ではあるが）現代西洋社会における仏教の広がりと定着について。さらに、仏教と近代性との適合性及び齟齬。そして、西洋独自の仏教生成の試み。
Damien Keown氏*4はそもそも生命倫理学者で、仏教と医療倫理に関する参考文献として、自らのBuddhism & Bioethics(1995)とBuddhism and Abortion（編著、1999)を挙げている（p.128）。また、”Buddhism and Suicide--The Case of Channa”(Journal of Buddhist Ethics 3, 1996)という論文あり*5。
少し以前に竹村牧男先生の『入門 哲学としての仏教』を読んだが*6、竹村先生の本はあくまでも「哲学」の入門書であり、綜合的な仏教入門ということでは（英語ではあるけど）こちらの方がお薦め。あと、入門書としては、三枝充悳『仏教入門』、（ちょっと古いけれど）渡辺照宏『仏教（第二版）』など。

ところで、第８章で日本の「水子供養」に触れながら、”Some Western clergy have shown interest in following the Japanese example developing a Christian version of the mizuko kuyo ritual for use in churches in the West.”とある（p.103）。さて？　因みに、参考文献として挙げられているのは、William LaFleur Liquid Life: Abortion and Buddhism in Japan(1992)である。
