ザ・バンドの創設メンバーでギタリスト／ソングライターのロビー・ロバートソン*1が、80歳で永眠した。
8月9日、ソーシャルメディアを通じ、「ロビーは、妻のジャネット、元妻のドミニクと彼女のパートナーであるニコラス、子供たち──アレクサンドラ、セバスチャン、デルフィーン、デルフィーンのパートナーのケニーら家族に囲まれる中、息を引き取りました」と訃報が伝えられた。
マネージャーによると、長い闘病の末、米ロサンゼルスにて亡くなったという。
カナダ・トロントで誕生したロバートソンは、10代半ばで、当時ロニー・ホーキンスのバック・バンドで、後にボブ・ディランのバック・バンドとなるホークスに加入。ロバートソンは1966年に発表されたディランの7枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『Blonde On Blonde』のレコーディングにも参加した。
ホークスは1968年にザ・バンドと改名し、ファースト・アルバム『Music From Big Pink』をリリース。60～70年代に「The Weight」「Up On Cripple Creek」「The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down」「The Shape I’m In」など多くの名曲を世に送り出した。
ザ・バンド解散後、ロバートソンは映画音楽でも才能を発揮し、とくにマーティン・スコセッシ監督との共作が知られ、高い評価を得た。最近も、スコセッシ監督の新作『Killers Of The Flower Moon』（2023年秋公開予定）の音楽を手掛けたばかりだった。
ロバートソンはソロ名義で5度グラミーの候補に挙がり、ザ・バンドは1994年、ロックの殿堂入りした。
