「私にとっても、クィーンといえば1970年代、それも『オペラ座の夜』というアルバムだ！」と書いたのだけど*1、その中に、”'39”というフォーク調の曲がある。ブライアン・メイの作詞・作曲で、リード・ヴォーカルもメイ*2。ブライアン・メイのリード・ヴォーカルが聴けるクィーンの曲もそれほどない筈。

まだ観ていないので、映画『ボヘミアン・ラプソディ』*4で使われているのかどうかはわからない。
'39 is a haunting folk song that tells the story of a man who goes on a journey and returns having aged "but a year", to find that that the lover he left behind has died in the many years which have passed. The track was written by Brian May, who had given up his PhD in astronomy for rock music*3, and though it's not made explicitly clear in the song, '39's protagonist has travelled through space and has experienced the time dilation effect of Einstein's theory of special relativity.
昔から好きだったけれど、最初に聴いたときは「アインシュタインの特殊相対性理論」に関係する歌だということは考えつかなかった。誰かがそういうことを語っているのを聞いたこともなかった*5。昔の自分を弁護するわけではないけれど、歌詞*6には「宇宙」を直接指示する言葉は使われていない。あくまでも航海の歌。ただ、milky seaというのは白濁した海ということではなく、milky way、すなわち銀河の言い換えなんだなと事後的に気がついた。
