最古の墓

2006年に仏蘭西南部のニーム*1で道路工事中で中世の墓地遺跡が発見されたが、この墓地は８世紀に遡る、（今のところ）ヨーロッパ最古のムスリムの墓地であることが明らかになった。仏蘭西の国立予防的考古学研究所（Institut National de Recherches Archéologiques Préventives=INRAP=French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research）*2のYves Gleize氏*3らの研究による*4。
埋葬された遺体は、ベルベル人に属し、メッカの方角に向けて葬られていた。戦闘による負傷の痕跡はなかった。これまでヨーロッパで発見された中世のムスリム墓地としては、Marseimulle（13世紀）、モンペリエ（12世紀）があるが、今回の発見で一気に４世紀も遡ってしまったことになる。気づいたのだが、ここに挙げられたのはみな仏蘭西であって、ヨーロッパにおけるムスリムの拠点であったイベリア半島（西班牙、葡萄牙）では発掘が全く進んでいないということか。
さて、中世から（何と！）19世紀に至るまで地中海世界の船乗りや貿易商によって話されていた「リンガ・フランカ」は単純化されたアラビア語の文法をベースに伊太利語や西班牙語の語彙が混ぜ合わさったものだったのだ。あのコロンブスも使っていた（David Bellos Is That a Fish in Your Ear?*5, p.9）。
