Wonderous Stories: The Best of Yes*1、２枚組で全20曲を通しで聴いてしまった。Alan Robinson氏の選曲はClose to the EdgeとGoing for the One*2からのものが目立っている。Close to the Edgeはほぼ全曲収録されているんじゃなかろうか。1980年代のトレヴァー・ホーンに乗っ取られてしまったイエスは論外として、イエスのベストがどのアルバムなのかというのは色々と議論があるところだろうけど、この２枚は私にとっては個人的な意味で、それもけっこうくだらない理由で印象が強い。Close to the Edgeは（Aという同級生から借りて）初めて聴いたイエスのアルバムであり、Going for the Oneは初めて買ったイエスのアルバム。

ところで、興味深かったのは、”The Yes story offers an almost perfect paradigm of how English post Beat/ Mod musicians morphed from playing the kind of dance-floor filling rhythm and blues of Stax/ Motown and Chess records, on to a far more lofty and demanding kind of rock music.”というAlan Robinson氏のライナー・ノーツ。イエス結成の経緯については詳しいのだが、Going for the One以降のことは完全に無視している。私としては、イエスの世界をヴィジュアル的に印象づけてしまった（またこのベスト盤でも使われている）ロジャー・ディーン*3のイラストレーションが果たした役割についても言及して欲しかったけれど*4。
