今月初めに香港や華南を襲った颱風蘇拉（Typhoon Saola）による現地へのダメージは幸いにして比較的軽いものだった；

しかし、香港や広東省にとって、本当の悲劇は颱風が去った後にやってきたようだ。
９月８日、香港や広東省珠江デルタ地帯は観測史上最悪の豪雨に見舞われ、香港では地下鉄の駅が浸水し、山道は土砂災害で寸断された。香港（新界）と深圳の国境を流れる深圳河も氾濫したようで、出入国事務も停止された。また、国境付近では100頭以上の豚が溺死したという。
