濠太剌利シドニーのGarvan Institute of Medical Research*2のVanessa Hayes教授*3らの研究ティームは、「現生人類」(ホモ・サピエンス・サピエンス)の起源が現在のボツワナのザンベジ川南岸地区だとする論文を発表した*4。
この研究では、現在南アフリカ共和国やナミビアに住むコイサン(俗称はブッシュマン*5)のミトコンドリアのDNAが分析され、最古の母系と言われるL0 lineageが辿られた。また、初期のホモ・サピエンスはその地に約7万年留まったという。
