最近米国テクサス州ヒューストンで或る女性が六つ子（より正確にいうと、３組の双子）を出産したが*1、やはり最近バングラデシュで双子（或いは三つ子？）を産んだ女性は事情がかなり違うようだ。
バングラデシュのクルナ*2に住む20歳の女性は２月後半に最初の子どもを産んだが、ほぼ１か月後の３月21日に再び陣痛を感じ、病院に駆け込んだ。翌22日に双子を出産。調べてみたところ、彼女には子宮が２つあった。BBCの記事によると、こういう現象をuterus didelphysといい、英国では２つ子宮を持っているのは女性1000人に１人だという。そんなの、どうして妊娠中に気づかないの？ とは思うのだけど、バングラデシュのような途上国だけではなく、2006年には英国デヴォン州ノーサム*3の24歳の女性が２つの子宮から三つ子を出産していたのだった*4。
