ボブ・ディランが欠席することになった12月10日のノーベル賞授賞式晩餐会で、パティ・スミスがディランの”A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall”を歌うことになった。『ローリング・ストーン』の記事によれば、パティ・スミス姐さんは既に（ノーベル文学賞受賞者が決まる前の）９月に晩餐会でのパフォーマンスのオファーを受けており、最初は自分の歌を歌うつもりであったという。ディランの受賞を知って、ディランの歌を歌うことに変更した。”A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall”について曰く、” It combines his Rimbaudian mastery of language with a deep understanding of the causes of suffering and ultimately human resilience.”
なお、ボブ・ディランは講演の原稿を既に瑞典翰林院に送っており*2、当日は翰林院院士のHorace Engdahl氏によって代読される。
パティ・スミス姐さんは2007年のアルバムTwelveの中で、ディランの ”Changing of the Guards” をカヴァーしている*3。
