ノーベル文学賞受賞者のボブ・ディラン瑞典翰林院に12月のノーベル賞授賞式への出席は無理という通知をした。
ところで、授賞式に欠席の受賞者はディランが初めてというわけではない。また、授賞式への出欠の如何に拘らず、受賞記念講演を行うことが要請されている。それは授賞式の前でも後(6か月以内)でもかまわない;

Dylan is not alone in not attending the ceremony. Novelist Doris Lessing*2 was too old, playwright Harold Pinter*3 was in hospital and writer Elfriede Jelinek*4 had crippling social phobia. Nonetheless, the academy noted: “The prize still belongs to them, just as it belongs to Bob Dylan.”

As this year’s Nobel laureate, Dylan is required “to give a lecture on a subject connected with the work for which the prize has been awarded”. The lecture should be given before, or no later than six months after, the Nobel Prize award ceremony in Stockholm in December.
