古から現代に至るまで、構築され続け、また流通され続けるステレオタイプ的な中国像。偉大なる中国だったり酷い中国だったり。本書はそうした虚像としての中国をひとつひとつ相対化しながら、中国という存在或いは空間が外部（例えば西洋人）の自らに対する願望や嫌悪を投影するスクリーンとして機能していることを示している。その意味で、本書は（学術書ではなくジャーナリズムの書という違いはあるものの）その志において、エドワード・サイードが『オリエンタリズム』*3で目指したこととパラレルであるといえる。
