３月26日、メリーランド州ボルティモアのパタプスコ川の河口附近に架かるフランシス・スコット・キー・ブリッジ*1にコンテナ船が衝突し、橋が崩壊し、橋上で作業を行っていた労働者８名が川へと墜落し、そのうち６名の死亡が確認された。
さて、この略1か月前、中国広東省でも似たような事故が起きていたのだった。2月22日の朝、広州市の朱江河口附近の「瀝心沙大橋」*2にコンテナ船が衝突し、ちょうど橋上を走行中の車輛が転落し、５名が死亡した；
