現地時間４月４日、トランプ政権の「移民に対するゼロ・トレランス政策」に抗議して、自らもコンゴ民主共和国からの移民であるTherese Okoumouさんが自由の女神像*2の台座に攀じ登り、３時間に亙る紐育市警との攻防の末、逮捕された。また、同日、自由の女神の袂では、Rise and Resistというグループ*3が「移民税関執行局*4撤廃（Abolish Ice）」を掲げて抗議行動を行い、逮捕者を出している。
さて、昨年２月には、自由の女神に「難民歓迎」という横断幕がくくりつけられるということがあった*5。
