英国のOpen Universityのジョン・マレイ博士*1らの研究は、イタリアのシチリア島にある、エトナ山*2が１年に平均14mmのスピードで地中海に向かって「滑っている」ことを明らかにした*3。マレイ博士は40年以上に亙ってエトナ山の研究を続けている。このスピードは遅いのか速いのか。
ところで、エトナ山の姿は（同じ火山である）富士山に似ている。標高も3300米余りなので、富士山とあまり変わらない。日本各地に多くの何とか富士があるけれど、上の方の雪も含めて、エトナ山よりも富士山に似ている山はあまりないのではないかと思う。〈シチリア富士〉と呼ぶ日本人がいてもおかしくない。
さて、Zepの”Thank You”*4で、”When mountains crumble to the sea,/There will still be you and me”と歌われているのだが、こっちの方は滑り落ちるじゃなくて、粉々に崩れ落ちる。
