この本におけるModern Japanは「近代日本」というよりは「近世／近代日本」と訳すべきだろうか。序章では、「近代性（modernity）」と「伝統（traditon）」についての一般的な議論がなされている*3。第１章では江戸時代、第２章では明治時代、第３章は戦争への道が、第４章は高度成長を核として戦後、1980年代まで、第５章は冷戦後の1990年代における「普通の国」（小沢一郎）への欲望が扱われている。因みに、この本は2009年に刊行されたので、その年の民主党への政権交代、その後の自民党＝安倍晋三の復活などは視野の外である。
Christopher Goto-Jones氏は和蘭のライデン大学の比較哲学教授で、専門は政治哲学、西田幾多郎、（哲学における）京都学派。
