魔女たち - Living, Loving, Thinking, Again

現代英国における魔女の世界。なかなか楽しい人たち。2001年の英国の国勢調査では7000人が自分は「魔女（witch）」であると答えている。これは宗教学的にはpaganism*1の一環として分類されるものかも知れない。実際、英国にはPagan Federationという団体がある*2。しかし、paganismが1951年以降につくられた〈新宗教〉なのか、古代から伝わる「基督教以前的異教（pre-Christian paganism）」の延長なのかは明らかではなく、魔女たちの間でも様々な意見がある。現在ではpaganismは公認された宗教であり、法廷でのpagan式の宣誓が認められており、病院や刑務所にはpaganismのチャプレンもいるという。
さて、Tanya Goldさんは”Of all the silly religions – and I think that all religions are silly – I believe that witchcraft is the least dangerous and the most benign.”という。また、

(…) Witchcraft is the ultimate eco-religion. Witches love our planet. They are pagans who worship the stones and the trees through the prism of their god and goddess, by practising "the art magical". I don't know what this is exactly, because no witch would tell me. It sounds odd, and very time-consuming, but not dangerous. There are no witch Jihadis, and few witch proselytisers.

さて、英国で呪術を禁じるWitchcraft Actが廃止されたのは1951年。「妖術（sorcery）」の罪による最後の投獄は1944年。魔女狩りについての本では、浜林正夫のものが、著者が英国史専攻であるだけに、英国について詳しいか（『魔女狩り』、『魔女の社会史』）。
