現地時間９月８日にモロッコのマラケシュから南西に約70kmのアトラス山脈で発生したマグニチュード6.8の地震。その犠牲者数は最初は300名余りだったのが、600になり、800になり、1000を超えたと思ったら*1、その翌々日には2000名に達していた*2。そして、いちばん新しい情報によると、犠牲者数は2800と、3000に迫っている。
地中海世界における地震というと、今年２月の土耳古の地震の記憶が新しいけれど*3、土耳古のような地中海東部ではなく、地中海の西部、特にアフリカ側の地震というのは余り知らない。今回のマグニチュード6.8というのも、モロッコにおいては20世紀以降最大のものだったという*4。しかし、マグニチュードは低くとも大被害を出した地震はそれなりに起っているのだった。2004年に起ったマグニチュード6.3の地震は600名以上の死者を出しており、1960年の地震は5.8だったものの、１万名以上の人が亡くなっている*5。
