現地時間７月18日、仏蘭西ナントのサン・ピエーレ・サン・ポール大聖堂*1が火事になり、ステンド・グラスの窓が焼け落ち、パイプ・オルガンも破壊された。捜査当局は当初から、自然発火や失火ではなく意図的な「放火」であると断定していたが、大聖堂でヴォランティアをしていたルワンダ難民の男が容疑者として警察に拘束されたことが明らかになった。
仏蘭西では、昨年４月に巴里のノートルダム寺院が失火のため消失したのだった*2。ナントでは、2015年６月に、別の教会、サン・ドナティアン・バシリカ*3が全焼している*4。また、ナント大聖堂では、2013年６月に何者かによって大量の落書きをされるということが起きている*5。
