ウンベルト・エーコ先生*1 死す。享年84歳といっても、つい此間まで講演やらシンポジウムやらで世界中を飛び回り、原稿を書きまくっていたイメージが強いのだが、「癌」を患っていたのだという。
Kevin Rawlinson氏の記事から、伊太利のMatteo Renzi総理のコメントに言及している箇所を切り取っておく；

The Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi, led tributes to Eco. “He was an outstanding example of a European intellectual, a single intelligence with an untiring ability to anticipate the future,” Renzi told local media.
“It’s a huge loss for culture, which will miss his writing and his voice, sharp and vivid thought and his humanity.”

また、AFPの記事から、エーコの生い立ちについて；

Eco was born on 5 January 1932 at Alessandria in the northern Italian region of Piedmont.
His father, Giulio Eco, was an accountant before being drafted to fight in three wars.
The Eco family name was reportedly an acronym of the Latin ex caelis oblatus, “a gift from the heavens”, which was given to his grandfather by a city official.
The young Umberto had a Roman Catholic upbringing, being educated at one of the Salesian institution’s schools.
His father was very keen for him to read law, but instead he entered the University of Turin in order to take up medieval philosophy and literature.

最初に読んだエーコの本はTravels in Hyperrealityという英訳のエッセイ集だったので、記号学者（哲学者）としてのエーコ、小説家としてのエーコ以前に、政治的コメンテーターや社会批評家としてのエーコに出会ったといえる。いちばん最近読んだのは『小説の森散策』。エーコは自分の本職はあくまでも「哲学者」であり、小説は週末の手遊びにすぎないと言っていた。というわけで、その『記号論』をマークしておかないわけにはいかない。エーコについて語るなら、ひとつは伊太利の現代思想や現代文学という文脈の中に位置づけること、また記号或いはテクストの思想の文脈の中に位置づけることが必要であろう。上に挙げた２本の記事には、特に後者の問題意識はないようである。いい加減なことを言っておけば、エーコの思想は、第二次大戦後のロラン・バルトの仕事を（多分）嚆矢とする間テクスト性の思想の流れの中で、またテクストの意味生成における〈読者〉の役割を重視する読書行為論（eg. イーザー『行為としての読書』）や受容美学（eg. ヤウス『挑発としての文学史』）との関連で理解されるべきだろう。
