Today, it's hard to picture young Mao on the streets he once walked. The neighborhood has shifted dramatically since Mao's time, developing into a veritable cnter of urban life in Shanghai. The Anyi Lu house lies on the property of the Jing An Kerry Centre, which took over the land in the mid-'90s and houses high-end retail brands from Burberry to Michael Kors, popular restaurants like Din Tai Fung and Element Fresh and the lavish Jing An Shangri-La Hotel.
However, as a government-recognized site of Red Toursim, Mao's former house has been protected from the tide of change. Though the entirety of Anyi Lu has been enveloped by the Kerry Center(sic.), Mao's house still stands in the middle of the conplex. It is one of the most obscure communist sites in Shanghai and has been closed off for years. Now it is finally undergoing renovation and will open to the public as a memorial museum early next year.
