「息を吐かなくては声は出ない。あまりにも当たり前のこと過ぎて、人はそれを忘れている」（p.25）――
「体育坐り」の話*2は幾つかある「息を吐かない人々」の事例の１つとして語られている。
話すことばというものは、息を吐かなくては生まれない。当たり前のことだ。が、人はこれを忘れている。現在では、無自覚のまま、できるだけ息を吐かないでしゃべろうとしている若者や子どもたちがどんどん増えているように見える。イキ（息）は生きると同根のことばだ。同じように、息と「生き」が同じことばである民族は世界に数多い。ヤマトコトバのイノチの「イ」は、息「チ」は勢いのことだから、息を吐く力、ひいては、話すことばに力が、勢いがなくなるということは、生命の力の衰えを意味するのだ。（pp.25-26）
