サブタイトルにもあるように、「旧石器時代」から現代（「ポストモダン」）まで、歴史を貫通しつつ、単一民族的・単一文化的〈日本〉アイデンティティを相対化し、多文化的・他民族的なものとして再構成しようとする試みといえる。1993年に濠太剌利国立大学（ANU）で開催されたシンポジウム”Stirrup, Sail and Plough: continental and maritime influences on Japanese Identity”での報告に基づく。日本人の寄稿者は、片山一道、花崎皋平、石井米雄、後藤乾一、内海愛子、上野千鶴子、西川祐子、網野善彦、西川長夫。ハード・カヴァーは1996年に刊行された。
第１部は古代（考古学）篇。その中で特に興味深かったのは、Clare Fawcettのテクストで、現代における古代、つまり戦後日本における考古学の社会的意味を、奈良県明日香村などの事例に依りながら、考察している。また、Simon Kanerのテクストには、人類学の一分野である英語圏の考古学者によって感じられた、歴史学の一分野としての日本の考古学への違和感が表現されている。第２部は琉球とアイヌモシリという南北の周縁から日本の単一性を相対化する試み。第３部では日本人と東南亜細亜世界との相互作用が論じられる。８章と９章は近世における交易、10章と11章は太平洋戦争という相互作用。第４部は近現代の家族制度が論じられるが、この本の中ではちょっと場違いな感じを受ける。第５部では言説やイデオロギーとしての〈日本〉に焦点が当てられる。西川長夫論文はブルーノ・タウトと坂口安吾を比較したもの。Mark HudsonとTessa Morris-Suzukiによる「あとがき」はペーパーバック版の刊行に際して追加されたもの。寄稿者のその後の仕事への言及のほか、1996年と2001年の間に起こったこと、例えば「新しい歴史教科書をつくる会」*2の活動や藤村新一による旧石器捏造問題*3。
