という記事を知る。米国における英語の「国語」化の動き。なお、現在のこの動きは移民法改正問題と連動したもの。結局は、”national language”ではなく、上院で可決されたのは民主党のKen Salazar議員の” the common and unifying language of the United States that helps provide unity for the people of the United States”とする修正案。
ところで、最初に英語を”national language”とする案を提出したJames Inhofe議員（共和党）によれば、世論調査では84％のアメリカ人が英語「国語」化に賛成しているという。思うに、バックにあるのは、英語しか使えない所謂一般大衆の上下、つまり一方では移民、他方ではポリグロットなエリートに対するルサンティマンか。日本と違って、米国では、bilingualという言葉にポジティヴな意味はあまりないということを知って、アレって思ったことがあった。
因みに、「国語」化反対者の弁；
The United States currently has no official language and some lawmakers said they feared Inhofe's amendment would lead to discrimination against people who are not proficient in English. They also said it could hurt efforts to promote public health and safety in other languages."Although the intent may not be there, I really believe this amendment is racist. I believe it is directed at people who speak Spanish," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada said.
