Suitman或いは韓国人の孤独

近所の港匯広場のAgnes bのショップで、韓国系米国人のアーティストであるYoung Kimのインスタレーション”Suitman exhibit”（「西服万歳」）が12月７日まで開かれている。
どこかサンプラザ中野に似ているスキンヘッドの男がダーク・スーツを着て、黄色いレンズの眼鏡をかけて、世界の至る所に出没する。東京、京都、北京、チベット、紐育、巴里etc. 四川省ではパンダを抱いて、瑞西のスキー場ではスノー・モビルに乗る。

The Asian-American used to feel alienated ecerywhere. When he was 10, his family left their hometown Seoul and relocated to the United States where he spent his adolescence and early adulthood.
“I considered myself to be American—as did any blind person I encountered,” he says. “But sighted people could not accept as culturally American.”
His job—he has always been an artist and photographer—took him back to Asia. However, in Japan, he found his alienation on a par with what he experienced in the States, only in the reverse. The face fit, the person didn’t.

彼は”Who am I”と問うのを止めて、”how I feel comfortable within myself”を考えるようになった。その帰結が”Suitman”である。スーツは”a universal language for men”であるが、それに身を包むことによって、何処でもその場所に同化することなく、”his own world”を構築することができるというわけだ。
