女性飛行家、アメリア・イアハート*1は1937年に太平洋上を飛行中に消息を絶った。
海洋探査会社、Deep Sea Visionは太平洋のハウランド島近海の水深4,877mの海底で、彼女が操縦していた飛行機らしき飛行機の機影を発見したと、発表した。なお、2018年には、1940年に英領キリバスで発見された人骨が彼女の遺体の一部であると同定されている*2。因みに、ハウランド島はホノルルから約3,100km南西。
