デヴィッド・ホックニー*1の1966年の作品「ニックのプールから上がるピーター（Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool ）」*2について。Jonathan Jones氏によると、この絵は「水中から出て来る美しい人体（a beautiful human body rising out of water）」というモティーフの反復であり、ティツィアーノの「海から上がるヴィーナス」*3、ラファエロの「ガラティアの勝利」*4の「男性版」であるという。また曰く、”Few modern artists have painted the things that make them happy with as much insouciant, guilt-free precision as Hockney did then.”とも。
因みに、タイトルにある”splash”は1967年の作品”A Bigger Splash”から*5。なお、英国で同性愛が「脱犯罪化された」のは1967年である*6。
