The Madcap Laughs

帽子が笑う不気味に

シド・バレット*1のThe Madcap Laughs*2をプレイヤーでかけてみて、30年も前にKNさんからLPを借りて針を落としてみたときの幸福感が甦ってきた。その時は何てポジティヴな曲たち、ヴォーカルなんだということを感じた。それは今回聴いても変わらない。それ以来、時々は”When looking high up into the sky/I breathe as the water/Streams over me”(“She Took A Long Cold Look at Me”)とか”The crowd aside, she straggled a bridge by the water”（”Feel”）とか口ずさんでしまうのだ。
さて、アルバム・タイトルのThe Madcap Laughsだが、日本でのタイトルは『帽子が笑う…不気味に』になっている。手近の英和辞典を引くと、madcapとは無鉄砲者、尻軽娘の意と出ている。とすると、『尻軽娘が笑う』？　ところで、”Octopus”には、

The mad cap laughs at the man on the border
Hey Ho, hop us over
Winds say blew and the leaves n white
They’ll never put me in their bag
The sea will reach and always see
The high you go so love you agree
The wind it blows in tropical heat
The creaking door will always creak
To up, to down, we’ll never meet

という一節がある。１語ではなく、形容詞＋名詞というかたちで２語に分けられている以上、ここでは「気違い帽子」と訳さざるを得ないことになる。ただ、掲載されている歌詞のオーセンティシティにはかなり疑問を持っているのだが、何ともいえない。ともかく、madcapという言葉から『不思議の国のアリス』に出てくるThe Mad Hatterを連想するというのも、そう不自然なことではないのではないか*3。チック・コリアにはThe Mad Hatterというアルバムがあるけど。

一見ストレートなラヴ・ソングのようでいて、歌詞はどれも難解というかよくわからない。特に、”If It’s in You”はピンク・フロイドの”Wish You Were Here”*4の中の”Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?”という部分の起源だと思うのだが、こんな感じ；

これらの歌詞たちを見ていると、みるみる英語に対する自信が萎んでくるのだが、この中でいちばんわかりやすかったのがジェームズ・ジョイスというのは皮肉？　ジョイスの”Golden Hair”は珠玉のラヴ・ソング；
