香港文化の或る側面を叙述する言葉としての「無厘頭」というのを知ったのはもう10年以上も前だ。その代表は周星馳（Stephen CHOW）である。
Grace ZHANG”Absurdistan: Wulitou*1 conquers the Chinese mainland”（That’s Shanghai March 2007, p.33）という文章を読んで、「無厘頭」という言葉が広東語の中の佛山の方言に発していることを知った。Grace Zhangの文章は、香港に発した「無厘頭」スタイルが今や大陸を席巻するに至っているという主旨なのだが、「無厘頭」は言語という面においては、”language of mockery and deconstruction”である――”Wulitou spoofs traditional poems and proverbs—breaking down sentence structure and adding liberal dollops of Cantonese or Mandarin slang, plus generous spoonfuls of English.”
さらに、
Grace Zhangは、これすなわち「無厘頭」の神髄は”anti-classical, anti-Confucian spirit”だという。
In Chow’s screen performance, wulitou is exaggerated further by the absurd scripts, ham acting and special effects. A small injury, for instance, turns into a geyser of blood, or perhaps a character shouting profanities ends up spouting fish.
「無厘頭」の大陸への浸透として、上海大学の石川氏は、馮小剛の初期作品と1980年代の王朔の小説を挙げている。さらにGrace Zhangが挙げているのは、TVドラマの『武林外伝（My Own Swordsman）』、寧浩の映画『瘋狂的石頭（Crazy Stone）』、「阿甘」の『大電影之数百億』*2である。
Grace Zhangによると、「無厘頭」の西洋への進出を阻んでいるのは、「文化的・言語的障壁」である。彼女は、中国語のコメディは屡々”lost in translation”してしまうという馮小剛の意見に言及している。

In the relativistic world of wulitou then, there is no right or wrong. No sense of loyalty or betrayal, no distinction between classicism and vulgarity. Abstract ideals have no place in wulitou; rather, it is defects of human nature and their power to amuse us that count.
「無厘頭」においては、広東語かマンダリン（国語）かというのはそれ程の意味を持たなくなってきている。何しろ、諸方言の並列が笑いを喚起するわけだから。これは或る意味では、複数でありながら１つである〈文化的中国〉を象徴すると言えなくもない。
