PEACE= Phenomenology for East Asian Circle

About the 2nd International Conference of PEACE

University of Tokyo Center for Philosophy (UTCP) is going to host the second conference of the Phenomenology for East Asian Circle (PEACE) from September 22 through 25 in Tokyo. The first conference held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong ended with a resounding success and reassured us that it is our serious, but enjoyable, duty to continue dialogues and discussions among East Asian phenomenologists together with our eminent colleagues from Europe and America. With this intent, we have extended an invitation to the conference to our friends from East Asia, Oceania, Europe, and America.
The theme for the conference is:
What is Experience? - Perception, Science, and the Life-World.
Phenomenologists have, for years, acknowledged the significance and the wide scope of experience, breaking with the classical empiricist notion of experience reducible to sense impressions and conceiving of experience as both richly structured and structuring. Philosophers belonging to other traditions such as analytic philosophy, particularly those interested in philosophy of mind and cognitive science, have gradually come to appreciate rich aspects of experience through recent debates over perceptual experience. The conference will be expected to offer an opportunity for phenomenologists themselves to reevaluate the phenomenological legacy on the concept of experience and to exchange new ideas about it. Papers on a wide range of topics have been called for, including the structure of perceptual (or emotional) experience, the relationship between scientific thought and experience, historico-cultural aspects of experience, the critique of recent cognitive science, temporal experience, the experience of the other, etc.
We hope phenomenological movements of our time will leave many traces on the contemporary intellectual scene.
