 Dorian Lynskey
"No name left undropped"

He hung out with Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, and accompanied the Beatles on their famous India trip. He made a string of diverse, innovative records, including the 1966 single Sunshine Superman, generally acknowledged as Britain's first psychedelic record. His elaborate arrangements and playful melodies have inspired the likes of Belle and Sebastian and Badly Drawn Boy.

と書きながら、"history has been unjustly unkind"、"Yet still the custodians of the canon regard him as unworthy of serious attention"としている。良くも悪くも、彼は" a quintessential product of the 1960s"であり、"the invigorating, try-anything sense of possibility, the idealism, the flashes of genius, the daft excesses - it's all there."

He was Keith Moon's neighbour, recorded with three-quarters of Led Zeppelin, helped Paul McCartney finish writing Yellow Submarine and co-wrote, with Allen Ginsberg, the famous placards in Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues clip.

 DJ Taylor
"Cheapened by the checkout"

すなわち、" the spiritual equivalent of universal suffrage"である。

there are other books lingering in the publishers' catalogues whose chances of straying into the public's line of vision are proportionately reduced every time another supermarket deal gets struck. Publishers, having first been deeply suspicious of the Woolworth's sales point, are now beginning to come round to its considerable advantages.

One of them, quoted in last week's Bookseller, observed: "Supermarkets are doing well because the titles being published are suited to the supermarket audience. All publishers are looking at supermarkets far more strategically than they were 18 months ago, as it is a good place to get into the charts."

Fine for supermarkets, which are selling more copies of the kind of books that get sold in supermarkets on highly advantageous terms, and terrifically bad for serious novelists who will never sniff a Tesco promotion, but know that their commercial sponsors are increasingly inclined towards the kind of product that sits nicely next to the barbecue displays and newspaper racks of the checkout.

George Monbiot "A restraint of liberty"と併読されるべきなのかも知れない。Taylorは、

Moving on to the wider implications of our supposedly democratised culture, as a general rule whenever a participant is offered more "choices", whether in the number of book outlets, TV channels or radio stations, the end result will be to depress the overall quality of the available material. Seventy years on from Lane and his mission to bring literature to the masses at sixpence a time, "democracy", alas, is not much more than a synonym for cheap rubbish.

Vanessa Thorpe"Race row may spoil Penguin's birthday"

To celebrate the birthday, Penguin is issuing 70 new short titles, or Pocket Penguins, drawn from its back catalogue or new work. Now, unexpectedly, the titles have provoked outrage and surprise because they include work by only two authors who are not white.

Although Penguin has published two of the most important figures in modern black literature, James Baldwin and Chinua Achebe, neither is included on a list that finds room for popular modern names such as Jamie Oliver, Marian Keyes, Gervase Phinn and India Knight, as well as paying tribute to significant white landmarks of world literature such as Gustave Flaubert, Albert Camus, Jorge Luis Borges, Paul Theroux, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Vladimir Nabokov, Sigmund Freud and even Homer, a segment of whose Odyssey gets a look in.

The only two black authors included are Zadie Smith, the young Briton who made her name with the award-winning novel White Teeth, and Hari Kunzru, who is best known for The Impressionist and Transmission, and has a worldwide following.
