1973年12月にケントから「ヒッピー」になるために倫敦に上京し（pp.6-7）、1974年夏に『ガーディアン』に「編集助手（editorial assistant）」として就職した（p.272）著者による1970年代の歴史。著者が英国人なので英国が中心ではあるが、そのトピックは（先進国／途上国、西側／東側を問わず）全世界に及んでいる。著者が1970年代を語るに当たって選択した鍵言葉は副題にもあるように「パラノイア」である。「パラノイア」の時代としての1970年代。具体的には、1970年代の代表的な悪役であるリチャード・ニクソンとウォーターゲート（第１章、第４章）、テロリズム（第３章、第10章）、英国にも及び始めた性革命（第５章）、アフリカにおけるクーデタとフレデリック・フォーサイス（第６章）、中国における林彪事件と蘇聯における反体制派の精神医学的処理（第７章）、CIAの暗躍（第８章）、ユリ・ゲラーに代表されるオカルト・ブーム（第９章）、イディ・アミンのようなアフリカのエクセントリックな独裁者（第11章）、英国の右翼が画策していた軍事クーデタ計画（第12章）、左右における陰謀理論の蔓延（第13章）等々。最後は”theme park of mass paranoia”（p.311）である北朝鮮を訪問した著者がこれって70年代かも！ と感嘆するところで終わる――”Reading about the Seventies, you may sometimes have a similar hallucinatory sensation; but when you look up and and gaze out at the twenty-first century you may experience something even more unsettling--flickering glimpses of deja vu.(ibid.)著者は陰謀理論とテロと戦争が蔓延する2001年の911以降の状況に1970年代の deja vuを感じている。

The mixture of panic, paranoia, and pessimism that characterised the 1970s engendered a peculiar hybrid mood―-gloomy yet feverish, torpid yet hysterical. If the Sixties were a wild weekend and the Eighties a hectic day at the office, the Seventies were a long Sunday evening in winter, with cold leftovers for supper and a power cut expected at any moment. But it is on just such a night-―while gazing at the fireside shadows, dreading another working week, cursing one's dyspepsia―-that the wildest thoughts often intrude. (p.309)

昨日はまた、祝勇『非典型面孔』*2、雨宮昭一『占領と改革』も読了。祝勇は作家であると同時に文化大革命の研究家。その文革研究における代表作であるらしい『反閲読――革命時期的身体史』も面白そう。
