中国語では「法国土司」と呼ばれているにも拘らず、フレンチ・トーストというのは仏蘭西とは関係ない。1724年に米国のジョセフ・フレンチという人が命名したもの。国名で言えば、寧ろAmerican toastじゃないか！ これは別に真新しい見解でもないようだ。2019年にアップロードされた以下の文章でも、この「ジョセフ・フレンチ」説が採用されている；

Wikipediaの日本語版、英語版、仏蘭西語版を見たのだが、「ジョセフ・フレンチ」説は出てこない*1。ただ、French toastというのは専ら米国での言い方であって、英国ではpoor knights of Windsorという。
英語圏では、French toastの起源というのはちょっと人気のあるネタらしく、検索すると、幾つも「ジョセフ・フレンチ」説が出て来る。例えば、

という2003年のテクストへのリンクが張られている。21世紀初頭の米国では、仏蘭西がイラク戦争に反対したことに対して、Frenchという単語を追放するという動きがあったのだった。French fries（フライド・ポテト）とともにFrench toastも言葉狩りの対象となった。
さて、French toastは正しくはFrench's toastとすべきだった。しかし、ジョセフさんはリテラシーが低く、所有格の作り方を知らなかったらしいのだ。

追記；
Brendan Koerner氏のテクストだが、よく読んだら、OEDが引く1660年の"French toast"にも言及している；
要するに、1660年の「フレンチ・トースト」はそのレシピから「卵」が除外されており、現在の「フレンチ・トースト」とは違うということになる。また、19世紀末までは、仏蘭西であるだけでなく西班牙でもあったし独逸でもあったという方が興味深いか。
The Oxford English Dictionary cites 1660 as the year “French toast” first made an appearance, in a book called The Accomplisht Cook. That preparation, however, left out the eggs, in favor of soaking pre-toasted bread in a solution of wine, sugar, and orange juice. The Dictionary of American Food and Drink contends that the first egg-based recipe in print didn’t appear until 1870; throughout the tail end of the 19th century, similar recipes appeared under the monikers “French toast,” “Egg toast,” “Spanish toast,” and even “German toast.”
また、 Koerner氏は、そもそもは”German toast”と呼ばれていたが、第一次世界大戦の時の反独感情から、第一次世界大戦で同盟国だった仏蘭西の名前を被せて”French toast”になったという説を紹介している。
