1980年代に一世を風靡した国際テロリスト、Carlos the Jackal（本名Ilich Ramírez Sánchez）に対する２度目の裁判が巴里で開始されたという話。カルロスは1994年にスーダン国内で仏蘭西秘密情報機関に逮捕され、1997年には1975年に仏蘭西国内で警官２人とたれこみ屋（informer）１人を殺害した廉で終身刑の判決を受け、現在服役中である。今度の裁判は1980年代に11名の死者を出した仏蘭西国内での爆弾テロに関するもの。記事を読む限りでは、非転向*1というか、我が青春に悔いなし！　という感じで相変わらず吼えている。

こちらの方の記事では、”a part-time engineer and full-time defender of his brother”を自称するカルロスの実弟でベネズエラ共産党員のVladimir Ramírez Sánchez（52歳）へのインタヴューを大きくフィーチャーしている。カルロスら兄弟の父親José Altagracia Ramírez Navasは弁護士で、大富豪かつマルクス主義者で、息子たちそれぞれにIllich、Lenin、Vladimirという「革命的な名前」を付けた。日本にもスターリンに因んで名付けられた有田某というのがいたということを思い出したのだが、それはともかくとしてVladimirの語る兄弟への教育というのが凄いというか興味深い；

"My brothers, who were only a year apart, had been home-schooled by communist tutors. We had a pool table at home and were allowed to play only games that encouraged discipline and precision. Playing outside with balls was considered to be a total waste of our time," Vladimir said.
In the 1960s, the family moved to London. "Our father's plan was that we'd spend nine years in Europe, divided between England, France and Germany, acquiring linguistic and cultural tools that would give us a more comprehensive view of the world and enable us to best contribute to the revolutionary processes of the time."

チャベス *2が一度カルロスを称賛したことがあるものの*3、ベネズエラ政府はVladimirによる「法的援助」の要請を無視しているという。
さて、 Carlosは本人の自称だが、the Jackalは英国のジャーナリズムが付けた綽名。Carlos the Jackalの由来について、Francis Wheen Strange Days Indeed*4から。1975年７月１日、倫敦のヒッピーBarry Woodhamsは西班牙人のガールフレンドの家で『ガーディアン』を読みながら、Carlosというテロリストが仏蘭西政府によってお尋ね者になっていることを知った。そして、ガールフレンドの友人にCarlosという奴がいたことを思い出した。そのCarlosは「ベネズエラのエコノミスト」を自称する「太った遊び人」で、左翼的な考えを持っていた。Carlosはその前月、巴里へ旅立つ前に彼女の家に「黒い旅行鞄（black holdall）」を置いていった。Barry Woodhams（異臭がした）鞄を開けてみると、そこにはダイナマイトのスティック、実弾入り拳銃、手榴弾、ゴム製の棍棒、それから英国の政治家などの住所が記されたリストが入っていた。警察に通報するのも嫌だったので『ガーディアン』に電話をかけた。取材に来た『ガーディアン』のPeter Niesewandはその旅行鞄が居間の本棚の裏に隠されていたこと、本棚にはフレデリック・フォーサイスの『ジャッカルの日』があったことに注目し、Carlos the Jackalと呼んだ（pp.223-224）。
