濠太剌利のシャーク湾に生えている、或るribbon weed或いはPosidonia australisと呼ばれている海草*1が「世界最大の植物」に認定された。その面積は「200平方キロメートル（77平方マイル或いは凡そラグビー場が13面分、或いはマンハッタン島のサイズの３倍以上）」*2。一見草原に見えたが、遺伝子分析の結果、地下茎で繋がれた単一の植物だった。ribbon weedの寿命は2000～１万年と見られており、この植物の年齢は現在4500歳であるという。
なお、これまで世界最大の植物とされてきたのは、米国ユタ州のPandoと呼ばれるポプラ*3；
