９月７日に起こった地震*2と今回の地震、どちらも同じ「ココス構造プレート（Cocos tectonic plate）」上で起こっている。この２つは連動しているのかという疑問が当然湧いてくるが、地震学者たちは２つは独立した現象であると見ているようだ。
