Starless - Living, Loving, Thinking, Again

SU Lichang（蘇立昌） Semantic Theory and Figurative Language: Cognitive Explanations*1に、Dylan Thomas *2の詩”Under Milk Wood”が（megametaphorの例として）引用されている；

It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible black, the cobblestreets silent and the hunched, the courter’s-and-rabbit’s wood limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbling sea. The houses are blind as moles (though moles see fine tonight in the snouting velvet dingles) or blind as Captain Cat there in the muffled middle by the pump and the town clock, the shops in mourning, and the Welfare Hall in Widow’s weeds. キング・クリムゾンのStarless and Bible Blackがディラン・トマスから引用だということは周知の事実だったのか。Starless and Bible Blackというアルバムの次に出た70年代クリムゾン最後のアルバムRedに収録された”Starless”では、

と歌われている。作詞はRichard Palmer-James。さて、Robert Zimmermanというユダヤ系青年がBob Dylanという藝名を名乗ったのもディラン・トマスを踏まえてのことだから、この詩人を媒介にしてボブ・ディランとキング・クリムゾンは換喩的に連関するということになる。夜を巡るクリムゾンの曲といえば、Starless and Bible Black所収のレンブラントのあの名画について歌われた、やはりRichard Palmer-James作詞の”The Night Watch”。以前ジョン・ウェットンの歌は気にくわないとか書いたことがあるのだが*3、”The Night Watch”のウェットンの歌い方は、センティメンタリズムが過剰にならないよう抑制されている感じで、よろしい。もし（例えば）グレッグ・レイクが歌ったとしたら曲が全く別の感じになるのだろうな。
