昨日ジャック・ニコルソンに言及したとき*1にはまだミロス・フォアマンの死は知らなかった。
映画作家のミロス・フォアマン *2が現地時間４月13日にコネティカット州ウォーレン*3の病院で亡くなった。享年86歳。フォアマンのチェコスロヴァキア時代の作品は知らず、米国に移ってからの作品についても、出世作『カッコーの巣の上で』*4、『ヘア』、そして『アマデウス』*5しか観ていないのだった。特に、後期の『人民対ラリー・フリント』や『月面人』を観ていないのは非常に遺憾なこと。『カッコーの巣の上で』をつくったときも祖国チェコスロヴァキアを念頭に置いていたように、全体主義との対決というのがフォアマンの生涯のテーマであったと思えるからだ。これは生涯のというよりも、親の代からの、というべきなのだろう。彼の両親はレジスタンスにコミットし、ナチスに虐殺されている。ところで、同じくチェコ人のヴァーツラフ・ハヴェルは1960年代の米国に滞在して、当時の対抗文化に大いにインスパイアされて帰国し、プラハの春に参加し、その後もチェコスロヴァキアに留まったわけだが*6、フォアマンはワルシャワ条約軍の侵略によるプラハの春崩壊の直前に米国に渡り、その地で（結果として）対抗文化の殿を務めることとなったのだった。
