白露政府は伯剌西爾との国境地帯にあるMonte Salvado村（と隣村のPuerto Nuevo聚落）の住民を、川船を派遣して救出した。12月19日に、200名前後の弓矢で武装した先住民Mashco-Piro*1の男たちが村を襲撃したため。彼らはロープ、食糧、鉈（マチューテ）などを奪った。Mashco-Piroは普段「自発的な孤立の裡で（in voluntary isolation）」生活しており、（非先住民系の）定住民とは滅多に接触しない。2013年８月にMonte Salvado村にやってきたときは、女性や子どもも雑じっており、槍や弓矢で威嚇したものの、事態は平和的に経過した*2。

Around 15 “uncontacted” tribes with up to 15,000 members are believed to live in the dense forests of the Peruvian Amazon. Direct contact with them is banned out of concern that they could succumb to common illnesses.
Anthropologists are trying to understand what caused this latest incident. Balbuena*3 said climate change, which was causing abrupt drops in temperature in this area of the Amazon, may have been a driver.
