北京オリンピックを目前にして、北京ではChinglish追放キャンペーンが行われている。The Beijing Municipal Tourism Bureauでは、新たに「星」を申請するホテルに対して、”to translate their names, service hours, room rates, and notices for guests into accurate English”を要求している。また、内部の標識やメニューも”correct English”で表さなければならない。
北京では、”Beijing Speaks to the World Committee”という”non-governmental linguistic organization”が2002年に設立され、”identifying and correcting translation mistakes in shopping centers, hotels, parks, buses, subways and even the airport”という活動を行っているそうな。
“Chinglish” was once prevalent in the city’s signs. For example, some hotels misuse “scatter” for “evacuate” in their emergency information. Tabacco shops still advertise the sale of “smoke” instead of cigarettes and the Park of Ethnic Minorities is identified as the “Racist Park.” Drivers are warned of the hazards of a wet road with a sign that reads: “The slippery are very crafty.”
