フランシス・クリックとともにディオキシリボ核酸（DNA）の「二重螺旋構造」を発見したジェームズ・ワトソン*3が11月の初めに死去した。享年97歳。DNA自体が発見されたのは19世紀に遡るが、DNAの存在が諸学の前提となり、DNAという言葉が科学用語からはみ出して日常言語におけるクリシェとなったのは、やはり「二重螺旋構造」以後であろう*4。
一方でコペルニクスやダーウィン並みの科学史的出来事の当事者でありながら、ワトソンはその積みあげてきた名誉を、人種差別、性差別的な暴言によってすべて失ってしまうという醜聞を晩年に体験した*5。そして、そのような彼を拾ったのは〈中国〉だったのである；
