現地時間９月10日、米国の極右活動家、チャーリー・カーク*2がユタ州のユタ・ヴァリー大学で演説中に、何者かに狙撃されて死亡した。享年31歳。彼は2012年に右翼団体ターニング・ポイントUSA*3を結成し、その代表を務めていた。
この事件は喩えてみれば、反ワクチンが新型コロナに感染して死んだというか、熊を殺すなと叫んでいた動物愛護家が熊に噛み殺されたという感じだろうか。彼は銃規制に反対して、銃を持つ自由にのためには年間数人が殺されても仕方がないと主張していたのだ。

良識的にはバラク・オバマ氏のステイトメントは模範的なものであって、その正しさや適切さは否定できない。しかし、仮令１人であっても、極右がより少ない社会は良い場所であろうし、また〈追悼〉という仕草はカークが唾を吐きつけた黒人、亜細亜人、パレスティナ人、ウクライナ人、ユダヤ人、同性愛者、フェミニスト、ムスリムといったカテゴリーの人々に再度暴力を行使することではないか。さらに彼の死は哲学的な問題を提起している。カークはかつてempathyという心の動きを否定し、empathyこそが米国社会を駄目にしたと主張した*4。彼の意を汲むならば、彼へのemparthyは一切禁じられなけばならない？*5
