先日息を引取った女優のニシェル・ニコルズの弟、トーマスが宗教団体ヘヴンズ・ゲート*2の信者だったことを知った*3。彼は1997年３月26日、教団の教祖マーシャル・ホワイトアップルや他の主要信者とともに、ヘール・・ボップ彗星の接近に触発され、地球生活を「卒業」して、次のステージに進化するために集団自殺して果てたのだった。
