Abdullah Goharを中心とする古生物学者たちは埃及のファユム凹地（Fayum Depression）*1で、約4300万年前のprotocetidsと呼ばれる水陸両棲で四つ足を有する鯨の新種の化石を発見した。体長約10フィート、推定体重1300ポンドのこの鯨は、古代埃及の死神アヌビスに因んで、Phiomectus anubisと命名された。
