文化人類学者／言語学者のメアリー・キャサリン・ベイトソン*1が年が明けたばかりの今月２日に亡くなっていた。享年81歳。彼女はグレゴリー・ベイトソン*2とマーガレット・ミード*3の娘。両親に纏わる幾つかのベストセラーをものしてきたが、そもそもは古代アラビア語の研究者で、最初の著書であるアラビア語文法書は未だに米国のアラビア語学習者に愛用されているという。
