ベイルートで発生した大爆発。少なくとも135名の死者と5000名の負傷者が出ているようだが、人為的な攻撃（テロ）ではなく事故であるようだ。爆発したのは硝酸アンモニウム（硝安）。2013年から港近くに貯蔵されていた。
レバノンの警察権力の捜査能力に対する信頼性は低く、この事故を契機に反政府デモに火が点いて、それを治安部隊が酷く弾圧するという悪循環が起こっている。また、アムネスティ・インターナショナルやヒューマン・ライツ・ウォッチもレバノン政府の操作能力に疑義を抱いており、独立機関による調査を要求している；
