４月13日、中国江蘇省の蘇州動物園で雌のシャンハイハナスッポン*1が死亡。享年は90歳以上だという。シャンハイハナスッポンはヴェトナム野生の２頭、飼育されている３頭しか生存が確認されておらず、彼女も死の直前まで同じ動物園にいる雄のパートナーと人工繁殖を試みていた*2。これで、シャンハイハナスッポンの（確認されている）個体数は３頭になった。但し、みな年老いた雄であり、彼女の死によってシャンハイハナスッポンの個体数が増える可能性はなくなった。
